چکیده

Zntrodzzction Focused ultrasound (FUS) has the potential to noninvasively treat cancer by selectively producing damage within a predetermined volume, without damaging overlying tissue. The feasibility of using MRI for guiding and monitoring FUS tissue damage has been previously investigated [l-2]. T2-weighted MRI appears to be especially promising for evaluation of the ultrasonic lesions. The purpose of this work was to study the relationship of FUS lesion (tissue damage) diameter on T2-weighted MRI and the tissue damage region on histological sections.

PET and MRI-guided focused ultrasound surgery for hypoxic-tissue ablation combined with radiotherapy in solid tumors

Background: The rationale was to develop an ablation approach to destroy regions of tumor resistant to radiation and thus reduce the time required for whole tumor ablation, while improving overall tumor control after radiotherapy. Materials and Methods: The system is composed of a micro positron emission tomography (mPET), 7T magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and a customized MRI-compatible foc...

500-element ultrasound phased array system for noninvasive focal surgery of the brain: a preliminary rabbit study with ex vivo human skulls.

The aim of this study was to test a prototype MRI-compatible focused ultrasound phased array system for trans-skull brain tissue ablation. Rabbit thigh muscle and brain were sonicated with a prototype, hemispherical 500-element ultrasound phased array operating at frequencies of 700-800 kHz. An ex vivo human skull sample was placed between the array and the animal tissue. The temperature elevat...

Blood Brain Barrier Disruption by Focused Ultrasound and Microbubbles: A Numerical Study on Mechanical Effects

Introduction: Microbubbles are widely used as contrast agent in diagnostic ultrasound. Recently they have shown good potential for applications in the therapeutic field such as drug delivery to the brain. Recent studies have shown focused ultrasound in conjunction with injected micro-bubbles could temporarily disrupt blood-brain barrier and let therapeutic agents transport into...
